Reproduced under license from the Canadian Museum of History, this box was originally carved by the great Haida artist John Robson, stepfather of the legendary Charles Edenshaw. this cast is made from the original which is from the Canadian Museum of History’s collection. .It is a fine example of the type of Victorian chest that the Haida specialized in during the latter part of the 18th century. Made of a high density crushed black marble composite to simulate argillite this box has an embedded pewter medallion to authenticate the museum reproduction. Argillite is a soft slate found only on Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands); it was first quarried in the 1820’s on Slatechuck Mountain.
