In the early morning of August 291997, Alert Bay awoke to the news that the Big House (Gukwdzi) was on fire. Many people came from their homes to observe the devastating scene taking place. The entire Kwakwaka’wakw community united to rebuild the Alert Bay Big House. In May of 1998 the carvers began recreating the house posts and support beams. Construction began on the Big House in August of 1998. The official opening was on May 28/29, 1999.
Featuring traditional Kwakwaka’wakw songs, this CD was conceived out of the need to raise funds for the continued operating costs and maintenance for the Alert Bay Gukwdzi.
The Royal Museum Shop is operated by the Royal BC Museum Foundation. All proceeds from the sale of merchandise go directly towards supporting the many fine programs and special events at the Royal BC Museum.
