Plate The Eagle and the Orca: Where Air Meets Water

Made of recycled glass, this plate features the work of Kwakwaka’wakw and Tlingit Indigenous artist Corinne Hunt.

Corinne describes her design: “Where Air Meets Water: The Eagle and Orca – The concept for this panel is based upon the physical depiction of air meeting water; a drop of water which creates a swirl as the air affects its surface. The whorl-shape created by this abstract notion has produced the form of an Eagle, on the upper left side of the panel and an Orca it’s body elusively curving around the right side of the panel.”

Corrine has continued to play with the whirlpool concept by introducing echoing shapes and forms that reflect across the surface of the panel and invite the viewer to explore the “waters” surface.

The Royal Museum Shop is operated by the Royal BC Museum Foundation. All proceeds from the sale of merchandise go directly towards supporting the many fine programs and special events at the Royal BC Museum.

Corinne Hunt
Kwakwaka’wakw and Tlingit Nations

Corrine Hunt was born in 1959, in Alert Bay on Cormorant Island near the North-eastern tip of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. She has lived in Vancouver since 1975, where she attended Simon Fraser University and majored in Anthropology.

Her maternal uncle, Norman Brotchie, piqued her interest with his beautiful hand carved jewellery and was instrumental in introducing her to the Kwakwaka’wakw art history. Corrine has been designing jewellery as a master carver since 1985, and was awarded the National Aboriginal Achievement award in 2011.

In 2010 Corrine had the distinct honour of co-designing the Olympic Medals which featured the Orca and Raven, her crest animals.

She is a member of the Raven ‘Gwa’wina’ Clan from Ts’akis, a Kwakwaka’wakw village on Vancouver Island. Her paternal grandmother, A’neesla’ga’ was a Tlingit noblewoman from Alaska. The Hunt family heritage has been doubly endowed with both the Kwakwaka’wakw and Tlingit traditions as evident in Corrine’s exceptional creations. She works and resides with her partner in Vancouver, BC.
