Reproduced under license from the Canadian Museum of History, this plate was originally carved by the great Haida artist Charles Edenshaw. This cast is made from the original which is from the Canadian Museum of History’s collection. This platter depicts Thunderbird and Whale, symbolizing the cultural power of the upper and lower world. The reverse of the platter contains an embedded authenticating medallion. Made of a high density crushed black marble composite to simulate argillite this box has an embedded pewter medallion to authenticate the museum reproduction.  Argillite is a soft slate found only on Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands); it was first quarried in the 1820’s on Slatechuck Mountain.
