In the words of Yasakw (Shelly Samuels), Haida, Kwakwaka’wakw, “Children are a gift as they carry our stories, our culture and our future. This is our reminder that they deserve to be loved, honoured and cared for. Every Child Matters. My Naanii (grandmother) Audrey was a Residential School survivor who put in the work every single day until the day she passed. Because of her and the women in my family, I am able to break generational traumas.”
September 30th marks ORANGE SHIRT DAY: Every Child Matters, Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation a day of remembrance and respect to honour the students and survivors of Canada’s Residential School system.
On this day, Canadians are encouraged to wear an orange shirt to show their support for survivors and pay respects to those who did not make it and their families.
